Napoli were unable to overturn the two-goal deficit they carried into the second leg of their Europa League last 32 tie with Granada, with the Serie A side crashing out despite a 2-1 win on Thursday evening.

Gennaro Gattuso’s side secured the win on the night thanks to goals from Piotr Zieliński and Fabian Ruiz, but a first-half strike from Granada’s Angel Montoro meant it was the La Liga outfit who progressed through to the last 16 of the competition.

The home side took the lead with just three minutes on the clock, as Zieliński intercepted the ball in midfield before charging at the Granada backline.

With no tackles forthcoming, the Poland international continued to advance before picking out the bottom corner with a beautiful left-footed effort.

The visitors restored their two-goal aggregate lead just before the half hour mark. After some sloppy Napoli defending saw them unable to clear their lines, Montoro produced a brilliant looping header which flew past the stranded Alex Meret and into the back of the net.

The Serie A side showed plenty of fight in their bid to try and claw their way back into the game, and they afforded themselves a foothold in the tie with just half an hour to play.

Having seen his poor first touch cost him an opportunity just moments earlier, Fabian Ruiz was yet again let down by his dodgy control, but this time Spain international managed to atone for his error as he prodded the ball past Rui Silva in the Granada goal to make the score 2-1 on the night and 3-2 to the visitors on aggregate.

Gattuso’s men continued to push late on, but the La Liga side held firm to hold out for the 3-2 aggregate win as Napoli were sent crashing out of the competition.
