Erling Haaland has admitted that seeing Kylian Mbappe net a hat-trick against Barcelona on Tuesday provided him with the extra motivation to score a brace during Borussia Dortmund’s 3-2 victory over Sevilla the following evening.
Mbappe hit a treble to give Paris Saint-Germain a 4-1 first-leg lead over Barcelona in the pair’s Champions League last 16 tie, and Haaland was in similarly impressive goalscoring form as he netted twice in the first half to leave Dortmund in the driving seat ahead of March’s return leg at Westfalenstadion.
The pair are regarded as two of the finest young forwards in world football, and their recent Champions League displays have seen them touted as the successors to the Cristiano Ronaldo-Lionel Messi rivalry.
Mbappe famously imitated Haaland’s celebration at this stage of the 2019/20 competition after PSG came from behind to eliminate Dortmund in the second leg. However the Dortmund striker played down any competitive battle between himself and the French international, revealing that his match winning performance against Sevilla had been inspired by Mbappe’s antics at the Nou Camp the previous evening.
“It was good to score goals, I love the Champions League and when I saw Mbappe scored a hat-trick yesterday I got free motivation so thanks to him,” Haaland told broadcaster Viaplay. “Yeah, it was a nice evening.”
The 20-year-old was then asked if he was in competition with Mbappe, and replied: “No, I saw Mbappe yesterday and he scored some nice goals and I got a free boost from him, it was nice.”
Haaland’s brace took his Champions League career tally to a ridiculous 18 goals in in just 13 appearances, and his outrageous goalscoring record has seen him linked with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid.
When asked about the admiration that Real fans have for him, Haaland remained coy, replying: “It’s always nice if someone wants you.”
